Living and Serving at SINI: A Transformative Community Experience
What makes SINI truly unique is the easy, informal access to the monastic community. It's so natural: you eat together, drink coffee and tea together, talk together. In other settings, the separation between monastics and lay practitioners is much more pronounced. At SINI, it's rare and close: the monastics are khenpos and geshes, and yet the environment is casual, warm, and deeply human.
For those interested in an in-depth visit to Buddhist pilgrimage sites while simultaneously learning from monastics, the Four Noble Truths program is unparalleled. In the expert hands of SINI staff, volunteers and monastics, participants visit the ancient sites of Sarnath, Varanasi, Nalanda, Rajgir, and Bodhgaya, and accompany the monastics to the Nyingma Monlam, an annual peace ceremony attended by over 10,000 devotees. Participants consistently rate the program among the most memorable experiences of their lives.
SINI also offers courses in colloquial and classical Tibetan, developed by Franziska Oertle and well known for their innovative and joyful approach to language learning. Whether you are drawn to everyday conversation or to the classical texts, our experienced and qualified teachers will guide your way.
We encourage you to reach out and share what talents you have to offer. On behalf of the many of us who have had the good fortune to connect with the SINI family, through service and volunteerism, participation in programs and events, joining in pujas and chanting, we welcome you.
