INITIATIVES

Dharma Transmission

At SINI, we empower the transmission of the Dharma by offering opportunities for students to carry out traditional Buddhist practices, including Buddhist canonical studies and writing, prayers, ceremonies, sacred pilgrimages, and retreats while developing skills to share these teachings with contemporary audiences. The Institute prepares monastics and practitioners to effectively transmit the roots of Tibetan Buddhism as embodied in the lineage of the Khen Lop Chos Sum, short for Khenpo Shantarakshita, Lopon Pema Jungney (also known as Padmasambhava, or the Lotus Born), and Chosgyal Trisong Deutsan, together they form the trinity, or in Tibetan, Sum.

The Institute builds upon decades of cultural and religious preservation work carried out by our founder, Tarthang Rinpoche. Our work is to support a vibrant and beneficial course of study and practice that enables the transmission of the Dharma for the benefit of all sentient beings. This comprehensive approach includes innovative language education programs, monastic training in modern communication methods, traditional practices and ceremonies, and cultural bridge-building initiatives that make ancient wisdom accessible to diverse global audiences.

To concretely support these efforts, SINI offers students the opportunity to speak, teach, and write on the teachings of the Buddha and traditional lineage masters while developing contemporary communication skills. Programs that support the Transmission pillar include the English for Dharma Purposes comprehensive language program, the Khen Lop Chos Sum Foundation Lecture and Writing Series, the annual Dharmachakra program, the Tibet Peace Ceremony, the Manjushrinamasanghiti Chanting Program, daily practices, prayers, long-term retreat programs, and monastic education initiatives.

The transmission work prepares traditional dharma holders to engage contemporary circumstances through skillful means and cross-cultural communication strategies, ensuring the continuity of Buddhist teachings across cultures and generations.

Monastic Education

Comprehensive educational programs support monastics with language training, cultural studies, and modern teaching methodologies. The initiative prepares traditional dharma holders to engage contemporary contexts while maintaining authentic Buddhist wisdom and practice.

Chanting Ceremonies

Traditional Buddhist chanting ceremonies preserve ancient practices through events like the Manjushri Namasangiti Sanskrit Chanting Ceremony and pilgrimage rituals. These sacred gatherings maintain the continuity of Buddhist vocal traditions while fostering community connection and spiritual practice.

Humanitarian Projects

Environmental and community relief projects address hunger, water scarcity, and promote food sovereignty through developing green spaces in the Sarnath area. These compassionate initiatives embody Buddhist principles by providing practical support to local communities while fostering environmental stewardship.
