This intermediate course continues the study of Classical Tibetan grammar through detailed instruction, guided reading, and practical application. Students will deepen their understanding of grammatical structures, syntax, and textual interpretation while working directly with classical texts. The course is designed for those with prior training in Classical Tibetan who wish to strengthen their reading fluency and analytical skills. Live instruction, course materials, and guided discussion provide a structured and supportive learning environment.

The Basics

Daily Structure & What to Expect

This course offers an in-depth study of Intermediate Classical Tibetan with Dr. Tenzin Ghegay, a native Tibetan instructor. Designed to build upon foundational knowledge, the course explores more advanced grammatical structures, syntax, and reading techniques used in classical Tibetan texts.

Students will strengthen their reading and comprehension skills through guided instruction, live discussion, and direct engagement with authentic texts. The course includes twelve weekly live Zoom sessions, comprehensive course materials, and access to office hours for individual support.

Course Structure

  • Twelve weekly live online sessions (1.5 hours each)

  • Instruction in intermediate grammar and syntax

  • Guided reading of classical Tibetan texts

  • Course materials provided through Moodle

  • Opportunity for questions, discussion, and instructor feedback

  • Office hours available for additional support

Session Format:

  • Hour 1: Introduction of new grammar structures

  • Half Hour: Reading and analysis of classical texts

What You’ll Learn

  • Deeper understanding of Classical Tibetan grammar

  • Use of ladon particles and their grammatical functions

  • Use of agentive particles to mark subjects and intentional actions

  • Recognition of source particles and their meanings

  • Construction and interpretation of relative clauses

  • Advanced sentence structures including location, instrument, purpose, reason, and indirect objects

  • Improved reading fluency and comprehension of classical Tibetan texts

Students should have prior knowledge of foundational Classical Tibetan grammar. Those who have completed Introduction to Classical Tibetan or Beginning Classical Tibetan are especially encouraged to enroll.
