Chanting Ceremonies
SINI’s chanting ceremonies involve reciting mantras and prayers to purify karma, generate positive energy, and align with enlightened qualities.
Chanting deepens concentration expresses devotion, and connects practitioners with the lineage of blessings. Chanting nurtures a vibrant connection to Buddhist traditions. Through educational programs and community involvement, SINI promotes a deeper appreciation for the richness and importance of oral practices in contemporary society.
Tibet Peace Ceremony
Tarthang Rinpoche initiated the Tibet Peace Ceremony in 2015. This five-day event, which follows the Bodhgaya World Peace Ceremony, is held at SINI in Sarnath. SINI hosts the ceremony, which provides food, accommodation, and travel for all participants.
This non-sectarian gathering brings blessings from all Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Over 1,200 monks and nuns from the Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya, Gelug, and Jonang schools participate. Lay practitioners also join in, offering prayers and practices for the world’s benefit. The ceremony concludes on the anniversary of Longchenpa, a revered master of the Nyingma tradition.
This prayer gathering in exile is dedicated to the people of Tibet.
Dharmachakra Program
SINI has partnered with the Light of Buddha Dharma Foundation since 2016 to host the Sarnath Dharmachakra Program. SINI provides accommodation and meals to monks from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Laos, and Nepal. After completing their three-month vassa, or rains retreat, these monks embark on a pilgrimage that culminates in the annual Tripitaka Chanting Program in Bodhgaya each December.
Monks from Theravada and Mahayana traditions find the program’s multicultural and interdisciplinary exchange essential for developing more inclusive and effective ways of teaching the Dharma. Each year, this collaboration sparks new ideas and synergies.
The monks gather under the shade of beautiful Neem trees with a view of the Dhamekh Stupa, and each country is allowed to recite the Dharmachakra Sutra. Most monasteries in Sarnath participate, including monastics from the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions and representatives from the Central University of Tibetan Studies.
International Manjushri Namasangiti Chanting Ceremony
The International Manjushri Namasangiti Chanting Ceremony was established in 2015 by Tarthang Tulku to support the revitalization of the recitation of this most sacred Sanskrit Buddhist text.
Rinpoche’s vision is to help restore this practice and spread its sublime blessings throughout India and the world. SINI hosts this unique program in Bodh Gaya, coinciding with the Nyingma Monlam World Peace Ceremony.
The annual ceremony is attended by approximately 60 pandits from Varanasi and Gaya, as well as Tibetan Practitioners from around the world, including SINI’s international Four Noble Truths Pilgrimage participants.
On-Going Daily Prayers
Collaboration, the fourth pillar of the SINI Bridge of Goodness, builds on the momentum gained from the three previous pillars of goodness: Roots, Study, and Transmission.
Collaboration is possible when individuals and institutions can identify their unique strengths and couple their own rootedness of knowing with an openness to learning and exchange with others.
SINI’s worldwide community is dedicated to creating a web of expertise and committed service. Collaboration ensures that the Buddhist community can meet the profound challenges they encounter.
Examples of ongoing collaborations include: Monastic-Teacher Training workshops, the Kangyur Karchag project, which is creating the first-ever Tibetan Buddhist encyclopedia of the words of the Buddha, student exchanges between SINI-EDP students and programs at universities in the U.S. and Europe, and Buddhist cultural preservation projects.
These opportunities connect all involved and hold great promise for enhancing our ever-expanding human mandala of intercultural understanding and evolution.
